SOBL Faculty-Student Research Showcase

In Line with Dr. Marissa Levy's committment to providing SOBL students with opportunities to develop and showcase advanced research skills, the School of Social & Behavioral Sciences sponsored nine faculty-student research projects in Spring 2023. The program allowed students and faculty to work together throughout the semester on top-level research projects and share the results with the campus community at the SOBL Student-Faculty Research Showcase last April on the Galloway Campus.

The William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy published the posters on its Student Research Webpage. The webpage includes video interviews that the Hughes Center staff conducted with the student researchers and their faculty advisors regarding their projects.

Psychological Strength Associated with Use of Classical Psychedelics

A recent study conducted at ������Ƶ showed that classical psychedelics can have very positive effects on the psychological strengths and resilience of people. The study was led  by researchers Trey Brasher, PhD (University of Califonia, Davis), Marcello Spinella, PhD ( ������Ƶ, SOBL) and David S. Rosen, PhD ( ������Ƶ University, SOBL).

Psychology Alum Naming Students' Lab Research Award After Dr. David Burdick 

Dr. Sean Mullen, Associate Professor at the University of Illinois and a SOBL Psychology Alum, named students Lab Rserach award after his " Academic Giants", Dr, Burdick being one of them. Sean won the Psychology Program Distinguished Alumni Award in 2016 and did his Psychology Distinction Project in 2022 under Dr. Burdick's supervision and mentorship.

The required qualifications to be awarded the David Burdick  student research award is to for the work and the students to represent some of his core values and attributes:

Criminal Justice Earned the ACJS Endorsement for Academic Excellence

������Ƶ's undergraduate Criminal Justice Program has earned the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) endorsment for academic excellence. It is the the FIRST in THE NATION to receive this designation of academic quality.

A New Winner of the Board of Trustees (BOT) Fellowship for Distinguished Students

Jessica Nash, a Bachelor of Science in Social Work student, is one of the winners of this year's BOT Fellowship for distinguished students. Her project encompasses creating an online platform for the ������Ƶ community that will allow students to buy, sell and swap used textbooks. The project will be designed to help cut down costs for ������Ƶ students. Dr. Rachel Kirzner will advise Jessie throughout this project. 

This is the second year in a row that students from the School of Social Services & Behavioral Sciences have received the BOT fellowship. The fall BOT cohort included:

• Mary Rose Keane, from the dual-degree in Criminal Justice program, and who was advised by Dr. Kimberly Schanz
• Stephanie Kusi Bamfo, from the social work program, and who was advised by Dr. Lisa Cox

Hornbeck Excavation at Local Museum

Dr. Bobbi Hornbeck, Professor of Sociology, brought students enrolled in her Archaeological Field Methods class at ������Ƶ to the Cape May County Museum. Students were able to learn about archaeological excavation techniques on the property.

Calicdan-Apostle named Global Scholar

Guia Calicdan-Apostle, Associate Professor of Social Work, was among 12 educators named, "Scholars in Global & Intercultural Competence" by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).  Professor Calicdan-Apostle was chosen out of 76 applicants from accredited social work schools in the U.S.  Ultimately, 12 faculty members from 12 schools were selected by the and the .

Sahin Awarded DOJ Grant for Police Reform Research

Nusret Sahin, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, is the principal investigator of the grant-funded study.  In cooperation with the Atlantic City and Pleasantville police departments, Sahin and his team of researchers will study the implementation of procedural justice practices, combined with the use of body-worn-cameras, in interactions between police, drivers, and pedestrians during traffic stops.  For more details, please check out the article from the .

Dickenson and Levine Present Research at Conference

Jessica Dickenson, a MACJ student, worked on research with Dr. Ethan Levine, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021.  Their research draws upon feminist science studies and aims to understand the social processes behind, and social consequences of various perspectives on interpersonal violence.  This summer, Jess took the lead on presenting their work at the conference.  Dr. Levine said that “Jess did an absolutely fantastic job! She rose to that challenge. Her presentation was clear and engaging. She was thoughtful and professional during the Q&A. The audience seemed very receptive to our analysis of varying conceptualizations of intimate partner violence in research, healthcare, and advocacy. Our next step will be to compose a manuscript for submission to the Journal of Applied Social Science. Jess will serve as second author on that paper.” Jessica and Dr. Levine were able to work together because of the graduate assistantship program.

������Ƶ Mock Trial Team competes in regional competition, wins awards

From Kimberley Schanz, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Mock Trial Team faculty advisor:

"The Mock Trial team competed (virtually) in the Regional Competition for the fifth time since the club's initiation at ������Ƶ. This year, under the coaching of Anne Crater (Investigator, Office for Equal Opportunity and Institutional Compliance) and the leadership of Club President, Annalise Catherine, they argued both the prosecution and defense sides of a civil mock trial case against teams from University of North Alabama, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, University of Illinois, Springfield, and Scripps College. Two team members won Outstanding Attorney awards:  Annalise Catherine ('22, Criminal Justice major) and Patrick Kelleher (’22, Literature major). Twelve competitors were awarded Outstanding Attorney; Annalise was tied for the second rank and Patrick was tied for third. Additionally, the team itself won the “Spirit of AMTA Award”, which recognizes the team that best exemplifies AMTA’s ideals—civility, justice, and fair play. They are voted to this award by their opposing teams  based on their demeanor in competition. Both Anne and I are extremely proud of their performance this past weekend, particularly since, given the longer Winter Break and an earlier competition date, the team had less time than normal to prepare for the competition. The team is looking forward to continuing to compete and improve their standings in the coming years."

Figart receives top award from economics association

At the (virtual this year), Deb Figart, Distinguished Professor of Economics, received the . Awarded since 1969, the award is named for two key founders of original institutional economics, Thorstein Veblen and John R. Commons. It is given in recognition of the contributions made by an outstanding scholar in the field of evolutionary institutional economics. Deb is the fourth person gendered female to receive the Veblen-Commons recognition.

As part of the award presentation during the conference, Deb presented an address titled “Good Work.” Her address examined public policies that can foster progressive institutional change in response to neoliberalism and the rise of the gig economy. The aim of these institutional changes is to promote “good work,” including in workplaces, homes, and communities. Much of her talk focused on policies to support unpaid caring labor, enhance capabilities, and reinforce social responsibility for provisioning. A longer paper based on Deb’s address will appear in the June 2021 Journal of Economic Issues.

What does it mean to Decarcerate Campus?

Dr. Oliver Cooke, Associate Professor of Economics presented at the Cape May Chamber of Commerce remotely on July 17th. His presentation highlighted positive and negative aspects to the local economy and what could be done to assist small and seasonal businesses through the pandemic.

Dr. Linda Wharton, Professor of Political Science announced the names of the recipients of the Alan F. Arcuri Pre-Law Fund Awards for 2020. The diverse and hard-working recipients is a testament to Dr. Arcuri's legacy. "Alan was always available to help promising students, and we are thrilled to be able to continue that tradition in his memory", Wharton said.

Dr. Michael Rodriguez, Associate Professor of Political Science and Dr. Patricia Reid-Merritt, Distinguished Professor of Social Work and Africana Studies released a book entitled Race and Identity in Hispanic America: The White, the Black and the Brown. The book offers a historical and comparative overview of the evolution of racial classifications in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Dr. Zori Kalibatseva, Assistant Professor of Psychology shared a research study on the effects of COVID-19 on student mental health. The COVID-19 student survey distributed by Active Minds shares demographics by the degree being sought.

Dr. Jess Bonnan-White, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice was awarded the International Peace Research Association Foundation (IPRA) Grant for creating change by exploring the role of policing in post conflict community peace.

Dr. Nusret Sahin, Assistant Professor, Prof. William McKnight, Instructor and Dr. Jess Bonnan-White, Associate Professor, completed their first procedural justice training session for local police officers in March.

Dr. Lisa Cox, Professor of Social Work and Gerontology, was interviewed for an article on managing loneliness published by the New York Times. Dr. Cox provides useful tips for practicing self-care during low times.

This book provides a sociology of the Black American experience. To be Black in America is to exist amongst myriad contradictions: racial progress and regression, abject poverty amidst profound wealth, discriminatory policing yet equal protection under the law. This book explores these contradictions in the context of residential segregation, labor market experiences, and the criminal justice system, among other topics, highlighting the historical processes and contemporary social arrangements that simultaneously reinforce race and racism, necessitating resistance in post-civil rights America.

Gina Maguire, professional services specialist at ������Ƶ Center on Successful Aging (SCOSA) and adjunct professor of Gerontology, presented “Creative Engagement in Dementia Care: Positive & Strength-Based Approaches” alongside Jodie Berman on Nov. 7 at the 10th annual Expressive Therapies Summit at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. 

Maguire’s session was a six-hour master class and highlighted TimeSlips, a creative means of engaging older adults with dementia in a meaningful storytelling activity. Earlier this semester, SCOSA was announced as a partner in the TimeSlips NextGen project.
